古琴灰胎塗刮雖然分粗、中、細三步驟，但其中也包含打磨、修型、填補等衍生工作穿插其中。正如上一個粗灰塗刮階段所述，灰胎幾乎影響一張琴的三分一音色，並為後期提供足夠的音色與形態修正空間，這階段可謂可易可難可快可慢。
